Miss IAU makes a grand ‘silvery’ comeback

It has been 16 years since Ms. Vanessa Leyva was crowned Miss Indiana Aerospace University in 2002. Now that IAU has reached its monumental silver anniversary, the Aerospace community could not any more wait for the much-awaited long overdue comeback of the most prestigious pageant of the school. Female Aerospacers from the different colleges underwent thorough preparation. First, aspiring beauty queens were screened by a committee spearheaded by the Students of Airline Management of IAU (SAMI), a departmental student-organization of the College of Airline Management. Of the many who applied, only 12 made it to the list. Next, they were given workshops in etiquette and personality development conducted by Professor Edgar Taghoy.  Immersion activities were also providedso as to boost their confidence and interpersonal skills. Foremost was their modern vintage photo shoot at Bon Ace Fashion Tools last January 28 and a sponsor visit in February 19. These ‘beauty-and-brains’ ladies also got to share their blessings through a feeding program with the youthof the House of Dreams last February 11. On the 23rd of February 2018, the day that the candidates had all been waiting for, was the Coronation Night. Cheers and banners were all over the university’s gymnasium in support of the different candidates. Although it was a gloomy weather that day,the candidates shined more than ever in their sportswear competition, evening gown parade, and the invigorating Q & A. The lucky ace of the night who was crowned Miss IAU 2018 is no other than Ms. Chessa L. Cuyos, a third year student of Bachelor of Science in Airline Management. The 1st Runner Up is Ms. Michelene R. More importantly, it is the goodness of your heart that will radiate the greatest. The pageant was hosted by television and social media personality, Mr. Benedict Salise. Among the judges of Miss IAU 2018 were: Dr. Michael John Busa, Mr. Albert Catamco, Mr. Rene Delrio, Ms. AriezPercuelles, Ms. Jasmine Apor and Ms. Bianca Willemsen.

IAU’s Silver Jubilee

In celebrating our school’s Silver Jubilee, we take time to break away from day-to-day schedules to give way to an equally necessary pursuit of skills and values. Through sports and other activities, we can foster an atmosphere of growth and learning by encouraging positive interaction among the members of this academic community which include the administration, faculty and staff, alumni and students. Having a harmonious relationship among the other sectors of the University is essential in moving toward institutional goals. Through all its resources, both physical and human, IAU hopes to provide its students with the kind of education they rightly deserve, one which nurtures and develops both professional skills and values such as industry, honesty and social awareness among its students. We regard our teachers not as intellectual reservoirs or as mere guardians but as companions in education.  Teachers know that they still have much to learn despite being good at their fields.  Every new encounter is a learning opportunity for them and their students.

Aerospacers Shakes Off First-Ever Quake Drill

July 17, 2017—The Indiana Disaster Risk Reduction Management Unit (IDRRMU) had its first emergency response exercise. The unit held a university-wide earthquake drill to showcase its ability to quickly respond to calamities and different types of emergency situations.

On site is a team of experts and professionals from various government agencies to observe and evaluate the activity. Rescuer Senior Fire Officer 2 Oiretuele C. Baguio of the Special Rescue Unit Firefighter of Lapu-Lapu City stated that “between a range from 1-10, in terms of readiness and capabilities, I give them (IDRRMU) a score of 6. For coordination and proper planning, they’re somewhere between 7 and 8”. Knowing that this is the very first university-wide drill, Mr. Adrian Adaptar, Chairman of the IDRRMU, states “as I am to rate the unit’s performance, I’d rate it as the best. Though we may have some lapses, I still consider it a success”.

This wasn’t only aimed to showcase their response capability but also served as a learning experience to its members. When asked about the key points that the unit has to work on, Fire Officer Baguio comments “Practice, practice and practice. Make sure that there is proper coordination between the unit and the Administration”. The IDRRMU is very young yet it is steadily making a firm foothold as one of the significant organizations in the University. Chief Executive Officer of IAU Mr. Harold E. Toring quipped that as far as disaster preparedness is concerned, the school awaits the recommendations from the authorities in terms of the key areas for improvement. He furthered that the Administration is willing to welcome whatever inputs the rescue unit wants to incorporate into the set of procedures. So far, Mr. Toring is optimistic to have started a disaster reduction program such as the IDRRMU as disasters are bound to happen anytime anywhere.

IAU Launches Disaster Risk Reduction Org

Water Survival Training
As the campaign for disaster-preparedness is heightened, Indiana Aerospace University (IAU) launched its very own Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Unit (DRRMU) on the summer of 2017. The Administration acknowledged the need to have a unit dedicated towards disaster preparedness. With no time to waste, they immediately formed her own DRMMU, a first school based DRRMU in the City of Lapu-Lapu under the supervision of IAU’s Safety Manager, Engr. Edjie Galleos and upon the leadership of its student Adriane Adaptar, BS Avionics Technology. It is composed of  thirty (30) Aerospacers who underwent the training series from April 22, May 6-7 and May 13-14 respectively.
Fire Safety Training
The DRRMU aims to promote disaster awareness and preparedness in the light of the country’s scuffle on both natural and man-made disasters. This organization also aims to complement the government’s efforts in beefing up the country’s disaster risk reduction and management program after having experienced the 2013 Visayas “killer” quake and Tyhpoon Haiyan “Yolanda” which greatly devastated the Visayan region. Starting off, the group underwent the Hazard Mapping, DRRMU Basics and Fire Safety Training conducted by the Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office along with the Lapu-Lapu City Fire District held at the University’s Aviation Room 2. There, the members were oriented on the vulnerability of hazardous materials and situations that can put student’s life into danger. Then, the trainees identified those potential risks that are present in the campus.
Hazard Mapping
In the same day, they underwent the fire safety seminar with a fire suppression drill, giving the members a firsthand experience on how to put out a fire. In the afternoon, the DRRMU Basic Skill training was conducted, providing the participants sufficient knowledge on disaster preparedness. The training on Medical First Responder was given on May 6-7 which was conducted by the Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office held at the Aerospacer’s Hall. The members were taught and trained to become first responders in times of emergencies. They were able to learn the basics on how to be a first responder such as patient assessment, first aid, CPR and FOD, type of carries and spine board operating procedure. Their third and final training for this summer was on Water Rescue, conducted by the 5th ARCEN of the Philippine Air Force held at Villas Magallanes on its first session and at the University pool on its second session. There, they were taught how to survive in the water and how to rescue a person from drowning.  Worth noting is the newly procured first batch of equipment for the unit that will fully aid them in this endeavor. The Administration also revealed plans to establish a modern command center that will become a monitoring center mainly dedicated towards disaster prevention. The summer tra ining capped off productively with hands-on activities on risk reduction and disaster management. It is envisioned that IAU’s DRRMU should be ready in times of emergencies and assist Aerospacers in times of injury, disaster awareness and preparation, and foster volunteering endeavors. Hats off to the University’s “first responders”!

Aerospace Engineering Majors Hype Up for AE Days

This year, the College of Aerospace Engineering (AE) launched a week-long celebration under the leadership of its student organization, the Society of Young Aerospace Engineers (SYAE). The SYAE prepared a battery of activities and events for its college. The AEvents and AEdventures started with the AEnger games, a test for the teams’ physical fitness. What came next was the battle of the brains competition called The Quiz BAE. No fancy strategy, no physical fitness, only intellectual value was required. As if all these were not enough, the SYAE AEvents culminated with the popular AEmazing race.  This was a battle ground to the things the AE Majors learned from all the past events. At daybreak, the engineers assembled at the school’s basketball court where the start of the race would take place. The first challenge was tofind your team’s banner. Next stop was Mactan Shrine. There, the AE Majors’ artistic talents were showcased through a mini movie challenge about the battle of Mactan. Then, they proceeded to Freedom Park at the foot of the second Mactan Bridge. At this point, endurance was the gauge as only two representatives from each group were allowed to perform the task. They were asked to measure portions of the bridge using only a six inch ruler. After, they headed for Plaza Independencia, a wonderful place to show teamwork. Clues led them to Magellan’s Cross where they encountered another set of problems. As the day was ending, the teams raced to our final destination, Ibabaw Mountain Resort located in Lilo-an Cebu. There all the awards were given and the party started. The winners for the events are as follows: AEngerGames : Greenwich             Business Month: Yellow Pineapple             Quiz BAE : Red Alert               AEmazingRace : Bluetooth             After all those mind bending and back-breaking challenges, the AE Majors took the best prize of all: friendship and camaraderie. Senator Grace Poe Graces Batch Remarkable’s Graduation

During the 23rd Commencement Exercise last March 19, 2016 held in the gymnasium, the IAU Graduating Batch of 2016 or colloquially tagged as batch “Remarkable” (as every graduating batch in IAU gets to choose a name for their batch) marched with their iconic tassel—a symbol of their hard work and perseverance throughout the years as they officially capped off their college journey having obtained their respective degrees.

The Guest of Honor for this year’s graduation was no other than the woman of the hour; 2016 Presidential Candidate Senator Grace Sonora Poe. Senator Poe was kind enough to grace the event amid preparations for the heavily anticipated 2nd Presidential Debate that was scheduled just only a day after IAU’s 23rd Commencement Exercise.

Gusto ko po sana ako ang magbigay ng inyong diploma. ‘Yun po talaga sana ang plano. But students, I’m sure you will appreciate this, if you are reviewing overnight or for many nights to be able to pass the exams, I still have to review for our debate tomorrow. Yan ang problema ‘pagnagka-cram,”quips Poe in her conversationally-laced rhetoric that must have connected her to the audience.

Shifting her tone a little bit further on the political landscape she said, “Actually umiikot naman kami sabuong bansa and we ask the LGUs, ‘What can we do for your province?’ But the problem is, of course, the country is a huge archipelago, maraming kailangan pag-aralan kaya mamaya mag pupuyat nanaman kami,”

Short-lived her commencement speech may have been but the celebrated Senator didn’t fret when invited by Airwatch (IAU’s Official University Bureau) for an impromptu interview. When asked about her plans for the aviation industry should she become president, she had this to say:

Well first of all, I would like the students to know that part of our platform is really to add as many airports in the country, to be able to make inter connectivity easy, to add more runways not just waiting terminals so that means if we have more airports, more capabilities there will be more jobs for you because more planes will come in and besides, with the ASEAN Economic Integration there’d be open skies meaning other airlines from other ASEAN countries can actually fly in here with less restriction so you can actually also work for those other companies”.

After her well-applauded speech, Chief Executive Officer Mr. Harold E. Toring presented to the lady of the hour, together with President and Founder Dr. JovenalB. Toring and Chairman of the Board Mrs. Cecilia E. Toring, a CESSNA replica as token of appreciation.

Indeed, Senator Poe was quick to tell the graduating batch to celebrate their victory and never to forget to choose the Philippine flag carrier before anyone or anything else. By: Ezrah May Sucaldito and Emmanuel Maurice Ray A. Yusay

IAU Upgrades Flight Simulator

Precision Flight Controls-C2Pro BATD-Cat III
Precision Flight Controls-C2Pro BATD-Cat III

Good news to the Aviation Majors and student pilots: the upgraded flight simulator is now fully operational at the College of Aviation’s flight simulator room!

The flight simulator was acquired years ago but recently it was upgraded for the pilot students to expose themselves in the simulation of real aircraft scenarios. The equipment replicates flight so realistically that serves as ground training for future airline pilots.

“Recently we upgraded it so we could be able to simulate as close as [the] real aircraft scenario,” quipped Captain Marc Aaron Uy, College of AVT Department Head.

Unlike last time the flight simulator is upgraded from single yoke to dual yoke to stimulate real aircraft experience where the Pilot-in-Command (PIC) has final authority over the flight. The PIC decides who will fly the aircraft and be able to share the responsibilities with their copilots by switching places with them periodically.

Capt. Uy also added that “the newly upgraded flight simulator is capable of any terrain and could simulate aircraft carrier landings”.

The newly upgraded flight simulator is capable to simulate not only simple single-engine aircraft but also larger complex multi-engines because of the fully configurable dual controls.

The upgraded flight simulator includes a full cockpit and has five monitors which could make your flight experience more realistic. De Lima as Hermana Mayor at St. Therese Feast

De Lima as Hermana Mayor at St. Therese Feast   Indiana Aerospace University together with its benefactors and ecclesiastical community celebrated the feast of St. Therese of Liseux “guide of aviators”— the patroness of the University last October 2, 2015. The mass was presided by the military bishop of the Armed forces of the Philippines (AFP), his eminence most Rev. Fr. Leopoldo Tumulak, DD and was con-celebrated by the Augustinian fathers. De Lima as Hermana Mayor at St. Therese Feast Among the special guests who graced the invitation of the first familywere  former Justice Secretary Leila De Lima being this year’s hermana mayor for 2015-2016 and     CAAP Flight Standard Inspectorate Service Assistant  Director  Gen. Beda B. Badiola, who represents the Aviation industry regulating body. After the mass, Hermana Mayor Leila De Lima went to the Chapel podium as she addressed the community. Her speech focused on the achievements of the Aquino administration—how it was able to alleviate the then drowning Philippine economy to being “Asia’s brightest star” to which she quipped that the rising economy will be all beneficial for the Aviation industry as one of the fastest growing one in the Asia Pacific. Then Secretary of Justice congratulated the founders, Dr. Jovenal Toring and Madame Cecilia Toring for what they have done with IAU for the past twenty-three years in the service of men and women who wish to soar for the skies.  The blessing of the new Aerospace Student Condominium followed. De Lima as Hermana Mayor at St. Therese Feast IAU’s official media bureau Airwatch was granted a rare opportunity to speak with Assistant Director General Beda B. Badiola while he was on his way to the Fiesta luncheon at the University’s HRM-TTM Building. General Badiola echoed the words from the Director General himself, Willie Hotchkiss, emphasizing the cultivation of excellence in Aviation institutions such as IAU. General Badiola was not hesitant in answering the question of whether CAAP is open for fresh graduates who would like to work in the regulating body in the future when he said, “Of course, we are set to produce the new generation of Aviation professionals who are experts in their field. So students need a solid foundation from Aviation institutions”. When asked of his advice to students of IAU and of the industry as a whole he said, “Get a solid foundation, study well and be safe”.
